The Matterhorn

This is a towering 14,685 foot tall mountain that is often called one of the wonders of the western world. It won’t be wrong if mentioned that it has become a self-parodying icon like the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building.

The Matterhorn is huge and awe-inspiring making to the eye of thousands of tourists to Switzerland. When traveling along the main street of Bahnhofstrasse, you see images of Matterhorn wherever you turn; on calendars, beer steins, postcards, and candy wrappers.

The best time to make a visit to Matterhorn is during July and August which promises the best weather. Though May and June have pleasant weather, skiing season is over, so many hotels and resorts will remain closed. Book your accommodation way in advance to avail the best lodgings of the Matterhorn.

Skiing is a beautiful pastime in Matterhorn. There are extensive cross-country tracks here that cater to the novice and the professional. Other popular tourist activities include sledding and snow shoeing excursions in the many glaciers and plateaus in Matterhorn. The Altesch is the longest glacier in Europe with its starting point in Concordia Platz.

The Matterhorn is basically a bilingual destination where you can speak in French with a group of people and in German with another group of people. And wine is what binds the people here. Wine is considered to be the universal language where tasting in a L’Oenotheque is a must. You can choose between the sentier viticole and the rebweg, the two drinks of the French and the German.

There are many attractions besides the towering Matterhorn of Zermott; you have museums, castles, galleries and hot springs are worth visiting. The whole experience of exploring Matterhorn takes a few hours; it is the skiing, drinking and the eating that consumes most of the time while in Zermott!
